OCEANSIDE ---- Paying tribute to an impressive list of local ministers, volunteers and community activists, the North County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted its annual Freedom Fund awards ceremony Saturday night.
 
Event Pays Tribute to King's Legacy

North County residents were challenged by the legacy of the late Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday during a prayer breakfast at MiraCosta College where the keynote speaker urged attendees to follow the example of the charismatic civil rights leader and "go the extra mile."

More than 250 people attended annual MLK Community Prayer Breakfast held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the federal holiday named for the slain civil rights leader whose birthday was Jan. 15, 1929. The event was sponsored by the city, North San Diego County NAACP and the college's Black Student Union.
 
Spirit of Giving is Alive This Holiday Season

In a time of deep economic struggle at home and two devastating wars abroad, the spirit of giving was abundant in North County this holiday season.
People from all walks of life ---- cops and kids, old people and poor people ---- volunteered, gave food and clothing and performed random acts of kindness for strangers, people like the volunteers who helped cook a Christmas Eve feast for people at Interfaith Community Services in Escondido
 
Church and Toys for Tots Help 200 Families

Nearly 200 families received an early Christmas Saturday in Oceanside as the Shiloh Church of God in Christ distributed gifts on behalf of the Toys for Tots give-away program.
Church volunteers worked hard bagging presents for children whose parents had registered to receive assistance.
 
Health Care Town Hall Draws Large Crowd

The debate over various prescriptions for health care reform came to North County Tuesday, with Rep. Brian Bilbray hosting an occasionally raucous town hall meeting in Rancho Bernardo that was followed by a group of clergy in Vista calling for an end to the often-vitriolic rhetoric attached to the issue.
